On average you will spend over 4.3 years of your life driving. So chose which car you want to drive wisely. We are here to help.

The average person in North America spends 101 minutes per day driving according to a recent Harvard Study. To put that into perspective, assume you drive between the ages of 17-75 years old, in culmination, you will spend over 4.3 years of non stop driving!

So what will you drive during all those years behind the wheel? Well, that all depends what you as a consumer value most:

  1. Fuel economy?
  2. Reliability?
  3. Comfort?
  4. The exhilaration and thrill?

We cannot determine what you value the most but we can tell you what Canadian consumers like to drive the most. From that scope, we can pivot and make assumptions about consumer behaviour in the automobile market.

Our data utilizes odometer readings from 65,000+ used cars in Canada from July 2016 to present. The most driven car brand on average is Acura and least driven car brand is Chrysler.

Average kilometers driven per make.

Average kilometers driven per make.

If you are in the market for a car, this chart determines if the car has more or less miles than the average.

So what observations can we make from this chart?

  • 4 of the top 5 most driven cars are Japanese manufactures. Clearly, consumers like to drive Japanese cars. Why? We are assuming because they are economical to maintain and fuel efficient.
  • Volkswagen is the most driven German car but, that's obvious since it's "the people's car". What is not obvious is that Audi is the most driven premium German brand followed by Mercedes-Benz, and lastly BMW. (Porsche is a sport car brand so we can expect them to be driven less since they spend majority of its time in garages).

What's surprising is the relatively low mileage for Chrysler and Jeep. These cars were loved for decades so clearly there is something up. The answer is simple.

Over supply.

There are too many of these cars produced to met the current demand and therefor average odometer readings in the used car market are low. You might be thinking average lower mileage is good but, no. These cars will depreciate far more than their peers because of one thing. Over Supply.

We now switch gears, and look at the data from a different perspective. Which manufacture has the most cars over 300,000 km? Why 300,000 km you may ask? Well.... this number is so high that clearly if your car goes over 300,000 km - it's a solid investment.

Chart depicts manufacture with most cars over 300,000 km driven relative to its supply.

Honda has the highest percentage of its cars on the road that are over 300,000 km ( Closely followed by Volvo). Interesting to see that out of our sample there were  0 Land Rovers or Jaguars over 300,000 km (Take a look at the Reliability Chart in the 'X factor'). Also interesting that BMW is at the bottom of the list for German manufactures hmmmm...

StatsAuto math methodology: Example Honda.

  • Out of 65,404 observations , 3175 were Hondas.
  • Out of those 3,175 Hondas, 154 were over 300,000km.

Since relative data is most meaningful we divided 154/3,175 to get 4.85%.
Meaning that 4.85% of all Hondas in our sample were over 300,000km.
This was the highest percentage amount of cars over 300,000 km.
